Toric Lens Implants

Toric Lens Implants

Astigmatism (from the Greek, not a point) is a common vision condition where the corneal surface is is not a perfect sphere, like a basketball, but is steeper in one direction and flatter in the other, like a football. Light therefore cannot be focused to a point without correcting for this aberration.

A toric lens implant is similarly shaped and inserted in the eye at a 90 degree angle to the corneal astigmatism, resulting in the image being focused much more clearly, correcting the corneal astigmatism.

Recent studies have shown that as little as half a diopter of uncorrected astigmatism can result in an uncorrected vision loss of about a line, which means that uncorrected vision will be about 20/25, when the potential would otherwise be 20/20.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cataracts, you are not alone. Millions of people worldwide have reduced vision as a result of cataracts. This site will help you better understand how your eyes change with age, what a cataract is, how the cataract procedure is performed and why the TECNIS® lens may be right for you.
